If you take a country like Egypt with a big population and only little cultivated land the desert is the only possible area of expansion. In the desert there is very little biomass but lots of solar and wind that can help to develop cultivated land and biomass.
It is therefore with a big population a pathway to expand communities and this way create local economic development.
Furthermore solar and wind technology are are only evolving and improving if we apply it. Big improvements are continuously being made just to showcase one go to:

i'M AFRAID TO SAY SOMETHING WELL KNOWN. NEVERTHELESS LET ME SAY WHAT I DO THINK IS LOGICAL TO LINK AT DESERT AS ENERGY SOURCE.
ABOVE ALL WIND AND SOLAR PANELS ARE NOT THE BEST IDEA; IT WOULD BE MUCH BETTER TO THINK AT SEEBECK EFFECT IN RIGHT COMBINATION WITH PELTIER.
FURTHERMORE BEFORE TO THINK AT SO SPECIFIC INITIATIVES IT WOULD BE BETTER TO CONSIDER THAT WITHOUT SUPER CONDUCTORS ITS QUITE IMPOSSIBLE TO TRANSPORT THE ENERGY OUT OF DESERT.
I'M PERSUADED THAT THE RIGHT SYSTEM IS THE CULTIVATION OF BIO MASSES. BIO DIESEL AND / OR ELECTRICAL ENERGY CAN BE ECONOMICALLY PRODUCED WITH CO2 EVOLUTION NOT HIGHER THAN THE QUANTITY OF CO2 ABSORBED BY CROPS. I KNOW WERY WELL THAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO LEARN ANYTHING FROM ME, BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE EXCESS OF ACADEMY OFTEN HIDES THE LOGIC.
MARIO DA RE - AGRES - R+D RESPONSIBLE.

[...] Examples of the “Winds of Change” are Napanee’s $300 million solar farm of which the first 10 MW or $60 million have been implemented and opened last week. Another $250 million solar farm in Eastern Ontario is in the planning. All together we have projects for $ 1.5 billion in the Eastern Ontario region of which half are implemented. Furthermore, a solar film factory for $500 million is planned and announced for Kingston ( I would however, be moderately cautious about the timing on this one). In Cornwall and Brockville innovative PV Production Projects and PV Solar farms are in the planning and will hopefully solidify a very promising revival and redevelopment. Two particularly innovative technologies are evolving: >> In Cornwall: Verdant Power free-flow test turbines in St. Lawrence River http://dcnonl.com/article/id27638 >> In Kingston: AE Atmospheric Energy Storage Pilot http://volkerthomsen.com/ae-atmospheric-energy-storage-system/ [...]
